arlo1stbirthday

Well kiddo! We did it! I kept you alive for a whole year and you have provided me with more meaning to be alive than I ever imagined.

What a year of adventures it has been. While I was iniated into the world of motherhood, and you began your journey on this Earth, you and I, we did a lot together.

We traveled. Oh boy did we travel! The adventures that began while you were in utero stamped your destiny to be a traveller. You traveled to Australia via Bali twice, visiting Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sydney. You went to Jogjakarta to visit daddy’s family three times. You also did a trip to beautiful Belitung Island. All up, you went on 21 flights! Your first flight was when you were 3 months and for every flight you took from then you always smiled and flirted with other passengers, then slept for almost the whole trip! Such a dream baby to fly with!

From the time you were a newborn baby you started breaking hearts with your good looks and outgoing personality. At just 2.5 months old, you were filmed in your first commercial for Ponds, wowing the director and producers with your handsomeness and cuteness.

Everywhere we go people comment on how extroverted, friendly and social you are. You go out of your way to flirt with strangers, touching their hearts and making their day special. It is a unique gift you have to bring joy to all around you.

You have your Arlo fan club, taking the attention in the stride. Whether it is while you “tour” the complex on your cute car, waving to all the neighbours as you go by, or when you play in your music or gym class, your daddy and I can’t get over how outrageously outgoing you can be.

You have sped through your major milestones to gain the nickname speedy Gonzarlo. How proud I am of your mother’s-milk chub, and of your height and weight being so high in the percentile. That said you are in complete proportion, you are just a big baby boy.

It is all about finger food with you, though I get the impression you would be happy just to drink milk from my boob forever. You could also happily play in the bath forever, bathtime is your favourite time of day.

You have developed a love of music and have learnt some amazing dance moves! When you move your little legs up and down and then wiggle your butt to the beat, it makes my day and leaves me in hysterics! And when you get the giggles and laugh out loud, it melts my heart completely.

You also love to play with balls and who needs toys when there is a remote control around? As I watch you play, I notice that you  observe the minutae. A tiny speck of dirt or a small object moving will catch your eye and your interest just as much as the obvious stuff does.

And there is not much that you enjoy more than cuddles and being carried. We love how affectionate you are. The moments when you come to me for a snuggle or a boob top-up make me see the baby still in you, despite being such a big boy.

You are yet to sleep through the night; sleeping is not one of your fortes. But I am comforted when I think you have slept next to me every night since you were born, your little face the first thing I see (and that wakes me!) every day.

Between your cruising and climbing, speed crawling and standing, you love to play peek-a-boo with whoever will do it with you, kiss-bye and clap to your own tune, a happy, cheeky and joyful little boy.

It is so much fun being your mum and I am so lucky you chose me! Here’s to an amazing first year and to many, many lifetimes more.

I love you so much little Arlo, no words can ever describe!

  1. As Arlo’s grandmother it has been joyful to read your letter to him in his first birthday. I still temrmber, so well, your very born first birthday and the incredulous way I felt at having actually raised my very own beautiful baby girl for one whole year. I am so happy and proud to know that you’ve embraced motherhood just asu dud. There is something about seeing that precious face first he very first tine…that wastage not love affair began, and has been growing over the past 38! Years. So the best is yet to come- although it’s hard to believe that he could ever top that first year of life, he will, over and over. And you know you truly love your child when even the tantrums are cute! So here’s to motherhood, your lifetime – and Arlo’s too, of course. Without mothers the world would be a very sad place indeed!
