Bliss Balls

It is a misconception that eating raw foods is no fun, and involves no sweets. If this were the case, me and my sweet tooth might never survive. It is quite the contrary that a raw food diet involves excluding desserts and other sweet snacks. In fact, a lot can be done with cacao, a completely raw ingredient, as well as with dried fruits and nuts, and through freezing fruit mixtures to make ice creams.

This recipe is a sweet snack that involves dried fruits and seeds, and these scrummy little balls of goodness are great for a snack on the go or an after-lunch sweet fix. They kind of resemble the traditional Indonesian snack onde-onde! However,the traditional onde-onde however are made from glutinous rice, sugar and pandan, and rolled in coconut.

This raw version of sweet balls makes a big batch that can be stored in the fridge for weeks and enjoyed just when you need them. They are easy too! Just don’t eat them all at once, or you might overdose on sugar which comes naturally from the dates and figs. Feel free to swap the dried fruits and the types of nuts you use, just keep the fruit and nut quantity the same to maintain the consistency you need to roll these delicious orbs of bliss!

Bliss Balls

Ingredients

1 cup of dates, seeds removed, soaked for 10 minutes to soften
1 cup of dried figs, chopped and soaked for 10 minutes to soften (other dried fruits such as cranberries, prunes, sultanas and apricots would also work, just soak first to slightly soften)
2 cups of nuts  (walnuts, almonds, cashews, pecans, macadamia all work well)
½ cup sunflower seeds
Sesame seeds for rolling  (freshly grated coconut would also work well)

Preparation

  • Place the dried fruits into the blender and blend until the mixture forms a thick paste.
  • Put this mixture into a bowl.
  • Now add the nuts/seeds to the blender and pulse until chopped.
  • Then add the nuts to the fruit paste.
  • The next bit can get a little messy! Knead the nuts and fruit together, and take small amounts and shape the mix into small balls. Roll the ball in sesame seeds or coconut then store in a sealed container in the fridge.

The balls are ready to eat straight away, or pack some with you when you head out for the day to snack on when you crave a sugar fix.

Makes 25-30 balls (depending on their size!)
