A topic that seems to have come up a few times this week is around finding your true calling.
What I mean by this, is doing what you love, what you know you were born onto this earth to do. The thing that lights you up and makes you happy.
This is such an important thing to know about yourself. It is one of the Soul Foods that I believe we need to nourish- our Passion & Purpose.
It is too easy to just cruise through life taking the easy route, or maybe worse, doing something you really don’t enjoy while you figure put what you really want to do (feeling miserable and unhappy in the meantime!). When this happens you feel like you are stuck in a rut.
You know that there is more to life than what you are doing now, but you have no idea where to go to next. Frustrating much?!
So how do we follow our Passion and Purpose if we don’t know what it is?
I am sure you know someone who seems so clear on what they want to do, be, have in the world and they go about achieving that with ease. But for most of us, knowing our true calling is not so easy.
If you are struggling with your calling in life, here are some tips that can help to set you onto the path that will light you up, add fire to your life and make it easier to love yourself and to love your life.
1. Think back to your childhood
Often, the things we did as a kid are the things that we were innately drawn to do. These were things we found fun, that we were perhaps talented and interested in doing because we were good at them, and that we did because it came easy to us.
Too often, as we enter into adulthood, the things we used to enjoy doing get forgotten about or perhaps they seem indulgent to pursue as an adult as our lives shift and we take on different priorities.
This is unfortunate as I think these things are key to the being closer to our calling.
When UI think back to games I would play with my younger sisters, it is uncanny. I would create treasure hunts so we could go on adventures and be explorers in new lands (really just our backyard and neighbourhood, but hey, when you are 8 years old and have an imagination anything is possible!). I would play “teacher” and write on the big blackboard we had and show my sisters how to read and write. We created our own secret language. I taught myself to bake and ran a cake stall out front of our house. I was even a budding entrepreneur at age 10 when I paid my sisters a $1 each to help me fold the newspapers I would then go deliver.
It comes as no surprise to me when I think back that I would become a world traveller living abroad as an expat, working as a teacher (now coach running my own business), have an interest in food and cooking and be passionate about other languages .
Following these pursuits now still light me up as an adult and are they are definitely part of my true calling to do this work I do now as a coach and educator in the field of health.
2. Reconnect with nature
Nature is healing and nurturing and nourishing and can provide us with the answers that elude us when we are confined to the city and the humdrum of our daily life. Sometimes we just need to get away from it all to get the clarity we need. Do some journalling, remind ourselves of the things that matter and see where those things lead us.
3. Know your worth
Take a piece of paper and write down all the things that make you valuable (and truly awesome). Don’t censor yourself. Let it flow. Be in the moment. And most importantly… don’t hold back.
It is only by recognising your own self worth that you can have the courage to follow your heart to pursue your dreams, no matter how scary they may feel. When you are stuck in a rut and feeling less than worthy, it buries you deeper in the hole. To escape this negative state of being you need to know the things about yourself that help you to understand your personal story and allows you to own your truth and be the authentic you.
This will be hard, but if you really want to get closer to your calling, then Settle in, warm up that cup of tea, light a candle, and put your pen to paper!
4. There are no limits
Perhaps you already know in your heart what your calling is, but you are too scared to pursue it. You are holding yourself back because your big dream seems too hard, not possible, unsafe, out of your comfort zone.
None of these feelings are actually a bad thing- to really live a life of passion you need to step out into the world where it is uneasy and scary and sometimes difficult. But isn’t it so much better for your heart and soul to be doing what you love than being miserable and comfortable? It is your choice at the end of the day, but to truly be happy- and to experience the amazing kind life that comes with feeling happy- you need to sometimes make difficult choices that are always worth it in the end.
