Goal Setting Fun in 2014

Here we are, entering the third week of this year, and I wonder how you are going with your goal setting and resolution keeping?

While I was away on holidays, I really focussed a lot on my goals and plans and how to get closer to my vision. I am pleased to say that in between diving, slurping on coconut shakes, eating delicious Thai food on the beach and exploring Koh Lanta on our scooter I managed to find some time to go deep with my goal-setting for both my life and biz this year.

On this annual end of year vacation with my handsome husband, I unplugged from the Internet, but I completely plugged into my desires, dreams and goals.

Koh Lanta Desire Mapping
What better place to Desire Map than on the beach, at sunset with a cold beer 🙂

I know that every coach out there is saying the same thing about resolutions and goals at this time of year, but I can honestly say that I can’t imagine where I would be right now if I didn’t do this planning every year (in fact, I am constantly reviewing and revising this work that I do throughout the year). It brings clarity to my dreams and helps me to stay focussed on my vision.

I am a pretty go-getter kinda lady, but it is only through setting goals that I actually know what I am going FOR. It helps me to connect with my heart’s desires and to also be really clear with the Universe about what I want so it can help me get there.

If the thought of setting goals makes you feel nauseous or stressed out, I want to reassure you that the process can actually be very fun and extremely liberating. Do you think I would have taken time out during my precious yearly break to do this work if it wasn’t fun?

I’m not saying that it is EASY, but I certainly felt empowered after I worked through the resources I now want to share with you here. I even got my husband involved when I got stuck or needed extra input- this doesn’t have to be something you do all on your own.

  • 1. Desire Mapping

Desire Map So I started off my 2014 goal-setting with Danielle LaPorte’s Desire Map. Hubby and I listened to the audio version during our travels to Thailand and then I completed the workbook on the beach one afternoon.

Danielle’s philosophy is simple and evolves around not what you want to achieve, but how you want to feel. Her own words describe the Desire Mapping process the best:

“What if, first, we got clear on how we actually wanted to feel in our life, and then we laid out our intentions? What if your most desired feelings consciously informed how you plan your day, your year, your career, your holidays — your life?” Danielle LaPorte

Whenever I read that it makes me feel so energised, it fires up my passions. Danielle asks her readers to come up with just 4-5 feelings maximum which become what will drive you in all your decision making and planning throughout the year.

After many hours of diligently completing the workbook exercises over a few days, I came up with my core desired feelings for the year:

coredesiredfeelings2014 I really love these four words which I have now pinned all over the place to remind me every day.

I can’t recommend this process enough, it will really change the way you think about things.

  • 2. Biz and Life Planners

Biz and Life Workbooks These planners by Leonie Dawson, who is an inspirational female entrepreneur I really admire,  releases these workbooks every year. I have been doing them over my end of year holiday for the past 4 years, with my favourite of all the activities being the 100 Things to Do list.

Last year I accomplished 60 of the things on my list. I transferred about 30 of the remaining things onto this year’s list and then added to it over the holidays. It was actually not easy to come up with my list this year.

I really had to stretch myself to figure out what things would light me up in 2014. I got through my list after a few days of deliberation and adding items when I thought of them, and I got a bit silly in the end.

Here is my cute cat Molly making sure that “Cuddle Cats Every Day” is on my list of 100 Things 🙂

I was surprised that I found it so hard to actually decide what things I wanted to do, but other sections of the workbook were easier than last year to complete. I seemed to have vision sharp clarity as I scribbled my responses with different coloured pens for some of the questions Leonie guides you to answer in the workbook.

  •  3. Spirited

Spirited A beautiful tool that integrates really well with both these guides is the Spirited workbook which is a companion to the book by the same name. Written by two beautiful women who I connect with online, it really got me contemplating rituals and how I use my time.

I already knew that this year I wanted to continue more deeply on some self development work I worked through last year, but Spirited really got me thinking about the spiritual side to my life in renewed ways.

There were also two words that kept coming up for me as I read and tinkered with some of the exercises. They are Ease and Abundance. I’ve decided to make these my words for the year to guide me. They are separate to my Cored Desired Feelings which are more part of me, than beacons of light to show me the way when I have the inevitable low times.

  • 4. Vision Boarding

I am following all of this deep soul work with a few hours set aside on the weekend ahead to make a vision board. I love doing these, and my husband and I are going to do one together for our partnership dreams and then I’m going to do one just for me.

They are easy to do- just flick through old magazines and cut out any words or pictures that sing to you and which you would like to envisage having or doing. Then stick the pictures in a collage onto some paper or card and keep  it somewhere prominent to look at daily, It helps you to visualise clearly all that you would like to bring into your life.

This is a powerful and fun exercise to do regularly- it is something I have been doing all my life, since I was a pre-teen and before I even knew what I was doing was even called vision boarding 🙂

So there you have it,  the three fun goal-setting, dream-creating, abundance-bringing, soul-stirring guides I use to set my goals and make my plans for the year.
