Mending the Diet Mentality

I’m going to have a little bit of a rant today, because I’m sick of people using the word “diet” when it comes to losing weight and living the life they want to be living.

Tell me, have you ever found yourself saying something like this:

“I’m going to be “good” this week, starting Monday. It’s okay if I am “bad” today.”

I know that in the past, this was something I would say OFTEN. And guess how long “being good” usually lasted? Until Friday, if I was lucky. Then along would come another weekend where I would binge and eat and drink and do whatever I liked.

Partly this was because I didn’t love and respect my body. Partly this was because I didn’t really care what I was doing to myself. Partly this was because I didn’t really know what living a healthy lifestyle meant. But mostly it was because I had in my mind that “being good” meant restricting my diet and exercising like a mad woman, almost like I was trying to negate the badness of the weekend.

If you nodded yes to my question above and if what I have said resonates with you, then I have another question….does this cycle of thinking start to wear you down?

Does it seem really fruitless to be constantly dieting, restricting your food and pushing yourself really hard just so you can feel better about yourself?

The things is, it all comes down to mindset.

While you are putting pressure on yourself to perform huge amounts of exercise, and mustering up all your willpower to eat “good foods”, you are exacerbating the whole mentality of “good” and “bad” which means this cycle will remain a constant battle.

I can honestly say that these days, eating well and moving my body every day is something I enjoy and which gives me great pleasure. I exercise with ease and make the conscious, healthy choice of food without question.

I’ve mended my broken way of thinking, so that I now have a healthy relationship with my body, and I enjoy living a lifestyle that involves  looking after myself, and it is NOT a struggle. In fact, it is super fun!

I want this “aware” way of living for you too, so that there will be nothing more natural than making the conscious and positive choice while the dysfunctional and destructive choices are no longer for you.

This requires clearing out the unhealthy ways of thinking so that you can have a positive relationship with your body, with food and your lifestyle. It is about being healthy, loving who you are and what you do, not about being good or being bad. It is definitely not about another fad diet, which will just lead to failure and distorted thinking.
