Wellness Seekere Wednesday Interview

This week’s Wellness Seeker is the enthusiastic and passionate Amina, who is the founder of Alanna Organic Jam, a thriving Jakartan enterprise. Amina loves everything herbal and organic,so it comes as no surprise that her jams are completely natural, preservative free and additive free, and made with a passion for people to eat real food that tastes great too. She is also one of the members of Komunitas Organik Indonesia, and is part of the committee currently organising the Organic Green & Healthy Expo which will be taking place in Jakarta from October 2-4.

Her love of the natural and healthy lifestyle definitely qualifies her as a Wellness Seeker- I’m very pleased to introduce you to the lovely Amina!

What made you decide to start following an organic and healthy lifestyle?

I fell in love with herbs for the first time when I started studying pharmacy, 9 years ago. I am amazed that a plant naturally could be used for remedies. At college I was taught that all the drugs must be processed with chemical materials and made into a tablet, syrup, etc. So the idea that plants, naturally from earth, can treat illness and cure people sounded unique to me.

I started working for several herbal business projects with lecturers in my university. After I graduated, I was accepted as the head of a well-known-brand pharmacy in Indonesia which was located in Bogor. I worked there for 1.5 years. Everyday I would see people around 40-50 years of age with several health problems and degenerative diseases. The worst thing is they had to take 4-5 chemical medicine prescriptions a day. Seeing that kind of situation, I became more than sure that a natural and healthy lifestyle is a must and herbal remedies could do better to cure diseases.

Long story short, after that I looked for a community with the same passion, and that’s when I met Komunitas Organik Indonesia. I also staredt building my own enterprise, Alanna Organic Jam.

What do you love most about changing your lifestyle/living this new way of life?

What I love most is the feeling that I am doing the right thing for my future-self.

What do you love most about running Alanna Organic?

I am passionate about inspiring people to eat naturally, and to educate people to be more selective in choosing products for their daily intake. As we all know, the usual products in supermarkest use preservatives, coloring and flavouring which is actually not good for our body short and long term. So through Alanna Organic I can encourage people to choose organic, healthy and additive-free alternatives.

What is the question that you get asked the most about eating organic?

Why are organic products more expensive? And my answer would be yes, if we find the organic product in the supermarket. The fact is we can get so much cheaper organic & healthy products online. Through Komunitas Organik Indonesia we can get so many organic and healthy products at a cheaper price because its purchased mostly direct from the producer. Until now the community has around 140 producers of organic, green or healthy products at affordable prices.

What are you most proud of, and why?

I am proud that I have made decision to enjoy an organic healthy lifestyle step by step and am still learning to do it better and better everyday. I am so passionate about it!
I am grateful that through Komunitas Organik Indonesia, Alanna Organic has had a chance to be shared on several national magazines and radio in Jakarta. it is in this way that we inspire more people to have a healthier lifestyle. Together with Komunitas Organik Indonesia, we have held the Organic Green Healthy Expo (OGH Expo) annually since 2011. The next one is this 2-4 October and I am excited!

What piece of advice do you have for people who are starting to incorporate more herbal & organic foods into their life?

Start withsmall steps. For example, start eating organic rice, or drink one glass of ginger tea everyday. From that small step will grow even more changes.

Smoothies or juice?

Definitely smoothies!

What has been your biggest challenge in setting up Alanna Organic?

Finding good quality, organic raw material suppliers.

What is your favourite recipe?

First is my Alanna Organic’s Strawberry Jam, of course 🙂  I love the sweet yet bitter taste. I also love ginger tea. I like the warm sensation in my throat after sipping it!

What do you do to relax?

Praying and having an aromatherapy massage.

What are you working on now? What is happening for the next 12 months for Alanna Organic that you would like to share?

We have just started to build a social program with a women’s community in a village near Bogor. We are empowering them to plant the organic raw material for Alanna Organic Jam, so they can get more income for living and especially for their children’s education.

What a wonderful endeavour, that just goes to show that going green and organic is more than just about the food! Thanks Amina for sharing with us as this week’s Wellness Seeker.

You can contact Amina to purchase her Alanna Jams through her Instagram page or send her an SMS or Whatsapp to +6281227115617
