Lor-Brannen-Graham-Interview

Meet Lori Brannen-Graham! This lovely lady is someone who I have only connected with online and not yet met face-to-face, despite our best efforts to meet up in the Big Durian. But, I just know this savvy vegan and fitness guru is someone with who I will totally hit it off when we finally do get to hang out on real life!

Being certified in plant-based nutrition, a registered holistic nutritionist, and a certified personal trainer with over 15 years in the fitness industry, Lori is passionate about the same things as me, and I just love Lori’s zest and approach to life! She really is one cool chick who is after my own heart!

Find out more about Lori in this week’s Wellness Seeker Wednesday interview!

What made you decide to be a vegan fitness professional?

Becoming a vegan fitness professional was a natural transition for me because I had already been in the fitness industry for many years working as a Personal Trainer and Registered Holistic Nutritionist. During this time I did work with some vegetarians and vegans but the ‘meat’ of my clientele were omnis. I became a vegan myself nearly 5 years ago and became more active on vegan bodybuilding and fitness social media sites. This increased my exposure and credibility with other vegans.

What do you love most about doing this work?

I work mainly as a physique transformation coach so my clients come to me already vegan or with the desire to follow a vegan meal plan. I love being a part of a client’s transformation, both physically and mentally.

What is the question that you get asked the most by clients?

One of the most common questions I receive from new clients is along the lines of ‘Are you sure I can get enough protein on a plant-based diet?’

What are you most proud of, and why?

I am proud to play a part in transforming the lives of others. It may sound cliche but it brings me great joy!

What piece of advice do you have for people who are starting to eat healthier?

My best advice is to take things day by day and not be hard on yourself. Each day you make a better choice than the day before is an accomplishment. It’s important to take an approach that suits one’s lifestyle. What works for one person may not work for someone else. Transitioning is okay.

Smoothies or juice?

I like both and believe they serve different purposes. Because smoothies include whole fruits (fiber in tact) and typically some add-ins like protein powder, leafy greens, non-dairy milks, and quality fat sources, I enjoy and recommend smoothies as a meal replacement or snack. They’re a great way to start the day, especially for busy people and I highly recommend them in my programs for post-workout recovery fuel.

Because fresh pressed juices do not include the fiber of the plant(s), including juices as a part of a whole-foods, plant-based diet is a great way to provide your body with an influx of nutrients. Juicing can be used as part of a detoxification program or to be enjoyed daily along with your main meals.

What has been your biggest challenge in running your business?

My main challenge in the beginning was finding and sticking to my niche. It’s easy at first when you want to build up your clientele/business to take on every client that comes your way. After years of online coaching I have built up a network with friends in the business that I can refer potential clients to if I feel they would be better suited with another health coach (and I have received clients this way, as well).

What is your favourite recipe?

One of my favourite recipes is for banana bread that I adapted from Enlightened Eating by Caroline Dupont. I’ve been using it for years and it’s always a hit. Caroline was one of my teachers at The Canadian School of Natural Nutrition…the entire recipe book is well used in my kitchen.

What do you do to relax?

I love to read and believe it or not being in the kitchen relaxes me. If I could only learn how to read AND cook at the same time!

What are you working on now? / What is happening in the next 12 months for you?

I have a busy season with competitive clients so that keeps me consistently busy but my main project is my upcoming wellness retreat in Bali that I’m co-hosting with my online fitness professional friend, Christy, The Blissful & Fit Chef. Also, I am currently in the midst of completing a certificate in optimal sports nutrition.

Thank you so much Lori for being such an inspiring woman- I can’t wait to meet you in-person really soon!

In her work, Lori offers competitive prep coaching and individualized meal planning that is dynamic and goal specific.
