What is So Good About Wheatgrass

Having a daily shot of wheatgrass is definitely not a new concept, and perhaps wheatgrass was one of the original superfoods that I tried many years ago before I was even interested health and wellness. But what’s so good about wheatgrass, and why should you have a shot of it every day?

There are actually heaps of great reasons to add wheatgrass to your wellness regime. It really is a nutritional powerhouse, providing energy, nutrients and important enzymes to the body when it is drunk.

What are the health benefits of wheatgrass?

Wheatgrass has the power to purify the blood, detox and cleanse. It contains all nine amino acids as well as high concentrations of chlorophyll, which is pure light energy and important for healthy blood and for stopping unhealthy bacteria from growing in your gut.

Its enzymes can assist the body in removing harmful free radicals from your system. It also contains a slew of healing vitamins and minerals A, B-complex, C, E, l and K and magnesium that can help your body to build a healthy immune system to fight disease by reducing inflammation in the body.

How does wheatgrass work its magic?

When consumed, wheatgrass quickly enters the bloodstream and fills it with oxygen that can help to remove and neutralize harmful toxins, as well as reduce cholesterol, prevent anemia and help with skin conditions such as excema and psoriasis as well as reduce acne prone skin problems.

Wheatgrass is high in oxygen like all green plants that contain chlorophyll. This is beneficial because the brain and all body tissues function at an optimal level when highly-oxygenated . Additionally, wheatgrass is stored energy which quickly assimilates in the body to help bring endurance and strength.

It is said that 30mls of fresh wheatgrass juice is equivalent to almost 1 kilogram of fresh produce nutritionally. Drinking wheatgrass can therefore assist with weight loss, because the body will be receiving enough nutrients to satisfy the brain thus suppressing the appetite.
How to consume wheatgrass

You might have seen wheatgrass at juice bars, sprouting fresh, so that it can be juiced using a special masticating juicer. You can also find wheatgrass in powder form so that it can be added to smoothies or other or directly into water to drink. There are also pill forms of wheatgrass so that it can be consumed orally like any other tablet or supplement.

The way that I’ve been enjoying my wheatgrass is as a 30ml shot first thing in the morning. I have sourced mine from Verdure Bali who deliver the wheatgrass to my home in Jakarta in the form of frozen cubes that when thawed are the perfect amount to get started with drinking each day.

How does wheatgrass taste?

I will admit that wheatgrass is not the nicest tasting liquid. It is quite bitter, which is why I just shoot it back quickly, or I add it to a smoothie so the flavour blends in with the other ingredients. You could also add wheatgrass in powder or liquid form to a vegetable soup or in a salad dressing so you really won’t even taste it but will still get to experience its benefits.
Due to the benefits it can bring to the skin, wheatgrass can also be added into your beauty regime by applying it to the skin like a mask or using it as a natural shampoo that can help prevent graying of the hair and to remove toxins from the hair follicles.

You should start off with just 30ml a day which could then be built up to 60ml per day which is plenty for this very high potency grass. It should be drunk on an empty stomach up to 30 minutes before you eat another meal.

I haven’t experienced any discomfort from having my morning shot, but apparently some people might feel a little nauseous which is just a detox effect. If this happens with you, try diluting the wheatgrass with some other juice or mixing it with honey (which will also sweeten it).

Since I discovered that I could get organic wheatgrass delivered so easily, I’ve been trying it every day now for a few weeks and I can say that I have a renewed sense of health and well-being since drinking it daily. My skin feels brighter, I have improved digestion and it has helped to give me energy that has lasted throughout the morning.

I do feel that wheatgrass is more than just a juice bar trend, and is definitely worth trying as a new addition to your diet. It certainly will not harm you in any way, it is completely safe- if only it was a bit nicer tasting!

  • Have you ever tried wheatgrass? If not, do you think you will now try it? if so, how do you prefer to drink it?
