Why you need digital detox

Let me ask you….when was the last time you unplugged from technology? I mean, really gave yourself a digital detox (not just a digital diet), where you didn’t look at a computer screen, didn’t check a smart phone or use the telephone, for a period of 2 days at minimum?

It is sooooo easy in our lives today to become hooked on technology, and for our devices to almost be like an extra appendage on our bodies.

I am definitely someone who is guilty of relying on technology and I have gone through real addictions to social media and the need to be online.

I really feel a bit lost if I go a day without checking my emails, and rely on ready access to the internet for so much of my life that it is slightly frightening.

The thing is, it really isn’t good for us to be constantly attached to technology. It is a really good idea to give you mind and soul a break every now and then.

The best way to do a digital detox is by going away on holiday, like I recently did, to a place where it is impossible to be connected.

However, if this isn’t possible, then maybe give yourself a weekend or even one day of the weekend, when you commit to staying unplugged. Tell your friends and family what you are up to so they don’t allow you to slip, and go for it.

The benefits of doing this can be amazing.

  • You will suddenly realise that you spend (waste) a lot of your time aimlessly doing things on your phone or computer. Productivity for non-technological activities will increase.
  • By not being able to browse Facebook or send Tweets and post Instagram photos at the drop of a hat, you will find yourself with more time to do activities that are really nourishing like reading a good old fashioned book, or some other long-forgotten art, craft or hobby.
  • You can spend more time outside, really enjoying your surrounds, and being truly present, rather than just doing something on your phone for the sake of it to fill time.
  • You can reignite your communication skills, and have some really deep and meaningful conversations with your loved ones, without interruption or distraction.
  • Your improved interpersonal relationships will also leave you feeling more energised, more creative, and more open to opportunities in the real world around you.
  • You can also get more in tune with yourself and your own intuition. Rather than looking outward at what everyone else is doing in the rest of the world and sharing things about you to the public, you have time to reflect and look inwards which is more powerful than you can ever imagine.
  • Even if it sounds like something difficult for you to do, I still recommend giving a technology diet a try. Trust me, the whole world will not collapse around you if you don’t reply to an email immediately, don’t check your Facebook feed for a day or two and if you don’t tweet every hour.

And that time away from technology will leave you  feeling refreshed and more rejuvenated than you ever imagined possible.

My best ideas have always come to me while away on holidays and not behind the computer or chained to my device, and I always feel inspired when I have given myself a break from being attached to my hand phone constantly.

  • I’d love to hear your thoughts about digital detox. Have you unplugged for a serious period of time? How did you go? What do you think would be most challenging about a digital detox?

  1. I’ve often thought about doing a digital detox, but honestly I’m always so nervous that I will miss something important! I know that really probably isn’t the case, but that’s the feeling I get when I think I’ll be away from my laptop or phone.

The closest I got was a recent trip to Argentina! I only used technology to book my hotel and tours at the next city! Other than that, no technology. And, I must say it was pretty refreshing and eye-opening to be unplugged!
